{ "trimmed": "Traffic Safety, National Police Week and Drones as First Responders May 2026 Dear Franconia Community – I wanted to start by thanking all of those that came out to the grand opening of the Franconia Government Center and took part in a tour of the station on April 11. It was a great event and we’re sorry we missed those who could not attend. With the first wave of Road Shark behind us, as the weather starts to warm up, we now turn our attention to Motorcycle Safety, Youth Traffic, and Bicycle Safety. With the nicer temperatures, we see an increase in motorcyclists and bicyclists sharing the roadway. In 2025, while Fairfax County saw a significant reduction in crash fatalities, Virginia still recorded 104 motorcycle-involved fatalities and 15 bicyclist fatalities. During the month of May, multiple events are taking place to raise safety awareness to include: the National Bike and Roll to School Day and Fairfax County’s Bike to Work Day Additionally, from May 11-31 is the NHTSA initiative, “Click it or Ticket” which is designed to increase seat belt usage through education and high-visibility enforcement ( Seat Belt Safety | Traffic Safety ) Also taking place this month is National Police Week . This week, which traces back to 1962 when President Kennedy designated May 15 as National Peace Officers Memorial Day, is dedicated to honoring the men and women who have lost their lives in the line of duty. The FCPD gladly participates in numerous events related to the week’s activities, including a memorial at the Sully District station commemorating the 20-year anniversary of the Sully Station attack , as well as the national candlelight vigil held in Washington, D.C., on May 13. Lastly, on May 25, we celebrate Memorial Day, which is the unofficial start of summer. While we gather with friends and family to honor all U.S. military personnel who lost their lives in service to our country, we ask that you do so safely and responsibly. Sincerely, New Station Location NOTE: Franconia District Police Station is part of the Franconia Governmental Center but has a separate address, 7170 Silver Lake Blvd. It is located on the south side of the Governmental Center at the intersection of Silver Lake Blvd. and Beulah St.. Drone Program Will Enhance Emergency Response in Franconia The Franconia Police District has played an important role in the emerging Drone as First Responder, or DFR, program. DFR uses drones to provide rapid reaction to police and other public safety incidents and promises to significantly enhance the speed and quality of response in the County and particularly in Franconia District Franconia was one of two districts that were part of the recently completed Phase 1 DFR testing in the County.
