The Social Security Administration (SSA) has updated its Program Operations Manual System (POMS) with new guidance concerning Trump Accounts (TAs) and their impact on Supplemental Security Income (SSI) eligibility. These updates, effective July 10, 2026, provide instructions for identifying and documenting these tax-advantaged investment accounts.
Trump Accounts are designed as a type of traditional Individual Retirement Account (IRA) to promote long-term savings for children. Contributions, generally up to $5,000 annually (adjusted for inflation), are invested in low-cost index funds, with specific rules varying by the beneficiary's age.
A federal pilot program further supports these accounts by providing a $1,000 contribution to TAs for eligible children born between January 1, 2025, and December 31, 2028. The new policy section details how TAs affect SSI eligibility determinations and outlines the necessary documentation procedures.
