The U.S. Postal Service Office of Inspector General said its auditors found unreliable data that puts costs at risk in the agency's management of facility leases.

The Postal Service leases nearly 23,000 of its 31,000 real properties nationwide at an annual cost of more than $1 billion, according to the OIG. USPS manages leases and rent payments, while a third-party contractor helps negotiate terms and submits annual reports.

Since 2021, facility-related lease costs have risen because of higher commercial rents, the OIG said. Auditors examined USPS's management of facility leases and identified the data problems.

"We made five recommendations to address the issues we found," the OIG said.

The findings and recommendations are detailed in the office's facility lease management audit report.
