Fairfax County is urging residents to sign up for Fairfax County Alerts to receive warnings about weather, road closures and other emergencies straight to their phone or email, as National Preparedness Month enters its final week.
The county said residents should focus on staying informed and looking out for the people around them. It also advised following its social media platforms, checking its emergency blog and visiting fairfaxcounty.gov to stay updated on emergencies.
In its daily update, the county highlighted three other items: a public hearing on the proposed Dominion-NextEra Energy merger, a police appeal for suspects in a $600,000 Springfield jewelry store robbery, and registration for in-person and virtual Medicare 101 workshops.
The county also said its Health Department, in partnership with the Virginia Department of Health, provides free child safety seats to qualifying families. Caregivers must attend a child safety seat class, offered at multiple locations countywide. To register, call 703-246-8850.
