American Regent, Inc. has initiated a voluntary nationwide recall of one lot of Papaverine Hydrochloride Injection, USP, 60 mg/2 mL single dose vials due to the discovery of particulate matter, identified as glass and/or paraformaldehyde.

The presence of such particulate matter in an injectable product poses significant health risks. Administration could lead to local irritation or swelling, and the particles may block blood vessels in vital organs like the heart, lungs, or brain, potentially causing a stroke or even death. Patients with existing cardiovascular or pulmonary conditions face an elevated risk.

The recall extends to the consumer level, affecting a specific lot of the medication. American Regent, Inc. has confirmed that, as of the recall announcement, no adverse events related to this issue have been reported.
