Oakland, Calif. – The Port of Oakland and TraPac Terminal have announced that the first two of four new European-built electric ship-to-shore cranes are now fully operational, marking a significant upgrade for the U.S. West Coast port. Manufactured by Liebherr in Ireland, these towering cranes, standing over 440 feet tall, were assembled on-site using ILWU union labor after their arrival in January 2026.
The commissioning of these cranes on July 7 was celebrated as a major step forward. Port of Oakland Executive Director Kristi McKenney emphasized their importance, saying, “These cranes represent a commitment to Oakland and the promise of Oakland. It’s our shared commitment, it’s our shared endeavors, it’s our shared growth, it’s our shared opportunity and the prosperity that we bring to our communities and regions far and wide with global trade.”
Chris Lambert, TraPac Oakland Head of Operations, highlighted the operational benefits. “These cranes give us the ability to service the largest container vessels operating today, vessels that were previously beyond our reach,” Lambert said. He added that this translates to “greater cargo capacity, improved efficiency, faster vessel turnaround, and a stronger gateway for global trade.” The 100% electric cranes also contribute to a lower carbon footprint and cleaner air for surrounding communities.
The new infrastructure strengthens Oakland's position as a key hub for refrigerated and agricultural cargo. Lambert noted, “California's farmers and food exporters depend on reliable, high-capacity infrastructure to move products to markets around the world. From fresh produce grown in the Central Valley to California wine and dairy exports, these cranes will help cargo move more efficiently and reliably through Oakland.” The project also generated approximately 2,100 jobs during construction and assembly. Two additional Liebherr electric cranes are currently under construction and are anticipated to be operational by Fall 2026.
