Mayor Karen Bass's Inside Safe program successfully transitioned 24 unhoused Angelenos into safe, stable housing during an operation in Pico-Union today. Conducted in coordination with Councilmember Eunisses Hernandez, the initiative connected residents of an encampment near W. Olympic Blvd. and Menlo Ave. with interim housing and supportive services before the area was cleared.
Mayor Bass highlighted the dual impact of the operation, saying, "Our work today in Pico-Union will make a life-changing difference for the 24 people who, tonight, will sleep in safe, stable housing instead of on the street." She added that it also benefits nearby businesses and residents. Councilmember Hernandez expressed gratitude, stating, "Today, more unhoused neighbors in Pico-Union moved indoors and were connected to the supportive services they need to begin rebuilding their lives."
This Pico-Union effort marks the 134th Inside Safe operation, contributing to Los Angeles's first consecutive two-year decline in homelessness, including a nearly 18% reduction in street homelessness. Earlier this week, Mayor Bass also announced that her House Our Vets initiative has secured permanent housing for over 1,000 formerly unhoused military veterans.
Beyond these immediate interventions, the administration is working to prevent homelessness by cutting red tape for affordable housing construction, updating the Rent Stabilization Ordinance, and implementing eviction prevention programs. Future efforts include advancing the Citywide Housing Incentive Program and expanding the Adaptive Reuse Ordinance to convert vacant spaces into homes.
