The DC Special Education Hub is holding an online Family Empowerment Series training, "All about IEP Goals: Appropriate, Ambitious, and Attainable," on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time.
The session will cover developing individualized education program goals for students and what families need to know about supporting their scholar's learning and progress. Topics include setting goals, what to ask about what makes a goal appropriate, ambitious and attainable, SMART goals and the metrics that make an effective goal, and working on goals at home.
The Hub recommends that families whose child has an IEP have a copy on hand so they can review their current goals during the training. The session will be held on Zoom, and registrants will receive the Zoom link an hour or two before the training.
Attending the Family Empowerment Series is described as a great opportunity for caregivers to receive information and ask questions about how best to support their students with disabilities.
The DC Special Education Hub also offers a Family Empowerment Video Series of six dynamic videos designed to clarify the special education world of DC Public and Public Charter Schools and create an accessible bridge for caregivers, families, educators, and students with disabilities. All videos are available in English and Spanish with open captioning.
The Hub is an initiative of the Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education, an independent and impartial government agency dedicated to assisting families and schools in DC with resolving complaints, concerns, and conflicts related to education. The office can be reached Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM at (202) 741-0886, and the SpEd Hub team at (202) 671-2890.
