The Port of Oakland experienced a significant surge in cargo volumes in June 2026, with total throughput increasing by 7.7% year over year to 181,356 TEUs. This growth was primarily fueled by a robust 10.3% rise in loaded container cargo, reflecting strong demand across both import and export sectors.

Full imports climbed 11.1% to 78,114 TEUs, while full exports saw a 9.3% increase, reaching 65,140 TEUs. This positive trend underscores the Port's role as a vital international trade gateway for Northern California. Empty container volume, however, saw a slight decline of 1.1%.

"June was a solid month for the Port, with growth in both imports and exports,” said Port of Oakland Acting Maritime Director Jason Garben. "We're encouraged by the continued strength in loaded cargo and remain focused on providing reliable, efficient service for our customers." The Port also reported an increase in vessel calls, with 81 ships docking in June compared to 77 in the same month last year.

Despite a 2.5% year-to-date decline in total TEUs through the first half of 2026, largely due to fewer empty container repositioning, loaded cargo for the same period increased by 0.3%. The June gains are attributed to sustained activity among retailers, manufacturers, and California agricultural exporters. The Port is actively collaborating with shipping lines, terminal operators, and supply chain partners to ensure efficient cargo flows and dependable service.
