Los Angeles Mayor Bass has called for legal action against the owner of a blighted property at 4343 N. Babcock Avenue in Studio City, following a recent fire and ongoing community concerns. The Mayor's office is also pursuing a lien on the property to recover city costs and evaluating a court-ordered receiver for all properties owned by the negligent party.
After visiting the site, Mayor Bass directed the L.A. Department of Building and Safety (LADBS) to declare the property a "present, imminent, extreme, and immediate hazard." City contractors are now securing the site, clearing debris, trimming overgrown trees, installing a permanent fence, and filling the pool. Asbestos testing is underway before demolition can proceed.
"Angelenos should not have to live next to a dangerous property, and they have a right to be frustrated," said Mayor Bass. "Irresponsible owners across L.A. whose properties pose a health and safety risk to Angelenos are due for a reality check. We will pursue all available legal options to hold them accountable." This summer, Mayor Bass signed legislation by Councilmember Rodriguez to shorten the nuisance-abatement process and increase penalties for negligent owners.
Since late last year, the Mayor’s Office, in collaboration with Council Offices and City Departments, has successfully addressed over 25 blighted properties across Los Angeles, including in Koreatown, West L.A., Melrose, and Downtown. The city continues to explore additional ways to strengthen enforcement tools and intervene earlier to address nuisance properties more swiftly.
