The Social Security Administration (SSA) could significantly increase verified data matches and improve program administration by enhancing its Numident verification systems, according to a new audit report. The audit found that out of 13.9 billion transactions processed between fiscal years 2021 and 2025, 1.3 billion (9 percent) were not verified as matches.
The report highlighted that all 30 sampled unmatched reports could have been verified if enhanced matching criteria were in place. A mere one percent increase in verified matches could lead to millions of additional matches each year, potentially preventing improper payments, maintaining more accurate records, and reducing manual workload for employees.
The audit recommended that the SSA establish processes for its components to collaborate on matching criteria and enhance these criteria where appropriate to boost verified matches. The Social Security Administration has agreed to implement these recommendations, aiming to improve the accuracy and efficiency of its data verification systems.
