The DC Special Education Hub will host an online Family Empowerment Series training, "All about IEP Goals: Appropriate, Ambitious, and Attainable," on Monday, September 28, 2026, from 7:00 PM to 8:00 PM Eastern Time.

The session will cover developing individualized education program goals for students and supporting a scholar's learning and progress. Caregivers whose child has an IEP are encouraged to have a copy on hand so they can review current goals during the training.

Topics will include setting goals, what to ask about what makes a goal appropriate, ambitious and attainable, SMART goals and the metrics that make an effective goal, and working on goals at home to support a child's learning outside the classroom.

The training will be held on Zoom, and registrants will receive the Zoom link an hour or two before the session. The Hub said attending the Family Empowerment Series is a great opportunity for caregivers to receive information and ask questions about how best to support their students with disabilities.

The DC Special Education Hub also offers a Family Empowerment Video Series, featuring six dynamic videos available in English and Spanish with open captioning, designed to clarify special education in DC Public and Public Charter Schools for caregivers, families, educators and students with disabilities.

The Hub is an initiative of the Office of the Ombudsman for Public Education, an independent and impartial government agency that assists families and schools in DC with resolving complaints, concerns and conflicts related to education. The office can be reached Monday through Friday from 9 AM to 5 PM at (202) 741-0886 or om.budsman@dc.gov, and the SpEd Hub team at (202) 671-2890 or specialeducation@dc.gov.
