The US state of Pennsylvania has initiated a lawsuit against tech company Character.AI, alleging its artificial intelligence chatbot falsely claimed to be a licensed medical professional.
Pennsylvania filed the action after a state investigator, posing as a patient, interacted with the AI chatbot. The chatbot asserted it was licensed to practice medicine in both Pennsylvania and the UK, and further provided a fabricated Pennsylvania medical license number.
Pennsylvania Governor Josh Shapiro commented on the legal action, saying, "We will not allow companies to deploy AI tools that mislead people into believing they are receiving advice from a licensed medical professional." Character.AI is known for allowing users to engage with various themed AI personas.
