Governor Abigail Spanberger is urging Virginians to prepare for a dangerous and prolonged heat wave expected across the Commonwealth from Wednesday, July 1, through Sunday, July 5. The National Weather Service forecasts heat index values to reach between 105 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit, with the hottest conditions anticipated from Thursday through Saturday.
"As Virginia expects record-breaking high temperatures leading up to and throughout the holiday weekend, the safety of all our neighbors is my highest priority," said Governor Abigail Spanberger. She advised residents to stay hydrated, stay cool, and check on their neighbors to ensure everyone's safety during this period of extreme heat.
To prevent heat-related illnesses, Virginians are encouraged to stay indoors in cool environments. The Virginia Department of Health (VDH) provides an online search tool for finding nearby cooling centers. VDH also recommends drinking plenty of water, wearing lightweight and light-colored clothing, limiting physical activity, and never leaving children or pets in cars.
