Washington, DC is set to host extensive semiquincentennial and Fourth of July celebrations, with Mayor Muriel Bowser urging residents and visitors to prepare for enhanced security and dangerously hot weather. The city will serve as a backdrop for numerous events, including the annual parades, Nationals games, the FIFA Fan Fest, the Great American State Fair, and the Salute to America 250 Celebration, culminating in extended fireworks displays on the Mall and at Anacostia Park.
Due to the America250 celebrations, Independence Day events on the Mall have been designated a National Special Security Event, meaning attendees should anticipate extra security measures and review the list of prohibited items. The fireworks show will be later and longer this year, and the public can receive real-time updates by texting DC250 to 888-777, with road closures and other information available on 250.dc.gov.
Amidst these festivities, the District is experiencing several days of extreme heat. Mayor Bowser advised everyone to drink plenty of water, limit outdoor exposure, and seek air-conditioned spaces. The Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR) is keeping outdoor pools and spray parks open, and ten recreation centers, including three indoor pools, will operate as cooling centers on July 3 and 4. To ease movement, Metro will be free after 5:00 p.m. on the Fourth of July, and public transportation is strongly encouraged. Residents are also asked to check on vulnerable neighbors, and a strong public safety presence, including Go Teams, will be active. The DC Department of Public Works announced that trash collection will slide from Friday, July 3, to Saturday, July 4, due to the observed holiday.
Regarding fireworks safety, the Fire & EMS department reminds the public that exploding fireworks like firecrackers and Roman candles are illegal, while sparklers under 20 inches and certain novelty items are permitted. Illegal fireworks use or sales can be reported by calling 311 or using the DC 311 Online Portal, while property damage or injury should be reported to 911.
