The Working Families Tax Cuts, signed into law by President Trump one year ago, have delivered over $82 billion in individual tax relief to American families and workers, according to a U.S. Department of the Treasury analysis of the first filing season. This landmark legislation prevented a $5 trillion tax hike and resulted in 97% of filers receiving a tax cut who would have otherwise owed taxes.
Secretary Scott Bessent highlighted the immediate benefits, saying, "One year ago, President Trump signed the Working Families Tax Cuts into law, and it took only a single tax season for American families and workers to overwhelmingly benefit from lower taxes, bigger refunds, and increased take home pay." He added that the law "codifies the America First agenda and lays the foundation for a new era of American prosperity." The Treasury noted that every Democrat voted against the legislation.
The tax relief was primarily concentrated among low- and middle-income Americans, with 96% of filers receiving a tax cut earning less than $200,000. Filers in the $100,000 to $200,000 bracket saw an average tax cut of over $1,250, while nearly 70% of beneficiaries earned under $100,000, with those between $50,000 and $100,000 receiving an average cut of over $815.
Key provisions included the "No Tax on Tips" deduction, claimed by over 7.5 million filers with an average of $7,000, and "No Tax on Overtime," utilized by over 29 million filers for an average $3,100 deduction. Additionally, over 35 million seniors claimed the Enhanced Senior Deduction, averaging $7,500, and nearly 40 million families benefited from the permanently doubled and expanded Enhanced Child Tax Credit. The doubled standard deduction was claimed by over 127 million filers, simplifying tax filing for 90% of all taxpayers.
The Treasury anticipates that the total relief will continue to grow as taxpayers who filed for extensions complete their returns, emphasizing the legislation's aim to provide substantial relief and tax certainty to low- and middle-income households.
