The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has announced the issuance of over $84 billion in civil fines to individuals identified as illegal aliens who have refused to depart the United States.
Since the start of the Trump Administration, more than 103,000 fines have been issued. These penalties include a daily charge of $998 for any individual who does not voluntarily leave the country after receiving a final order of removal.
Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis emphasized the administration's stance, saying, "Under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, DHS is working faster than ever before to remove criminal illegal aliens from our country." She added, "Our message to illegal aliens is clear: LEAVE NOW. If you don’t you will face the consequences, including fines, arrest, and deportation."
Bis highlighted an alternative, stating that individuals can use the CBP Home app to receive a free flight home and $2,600, which also grants forgiveness for any civil fines. This streamlined process for fining, announced in June 2025 by DHS and the U.S. Department of Justice, eliminated a 30-day notice period and shortened the contestation process.
