Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass will be joined by Downtown L.A. residents, business leaders, and local elected officials on Friday, October 2 at 9:00 AM to launch the City's first Vacant to Vibrant program, which aims to transform empty storefronts into flourishing small businesses that will drive foot traffic and continued economic opportunity to Downtown.

Media can RSVP to lamayornews@lacity.org. No other public events are scheduled.

The National Weather Service has issued an Extreme Heat Warning for the City of Los Angeles that will go into effect Friday, October 2, at 10:00 AM, through Thursday, October 8. The City has hundreds of locations open for relief from the heat, including Recreation and Parks facilities and local library branches. Locations and hours of operation are available at laparks.org/reccenter and lapl.org/branches, or by calling 3-1-1. Dedicated cooling centers will also operate under extended hours across the city.

The Los Angeles County Department of Public Health recommends staying hydrated all day, avoiding the hottest hours outdoors, wearing lightweight, light-colored clothes, a hat or umbrella, and sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, and keeping homes cool. Residents who cannot cool their homes should go to an air-conditioned space or cooling center. Officials warn never to leave children or pets in a vehicle, even briefly, and to call 911 if a child or pet is seen alone in a vehicle.

Health officials also advise checking on those at higher risk, including older adults, pregnant women, children, those who live alone, outdoor workers and athletes, and anyone without air conditioning. Call 911 right away for confusion, fainting, hot or red skin, a high body temperature of 103°F or higher, a fast and strong pulse, headache, dizziness, or nausea.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power encourages Angelenos to conserve energy as demand may increase with air conditioner use. LADWP recommends adjusting air conditioning thermostats to 78 degrees and turning off air conditioning when away from home without pets inside. Power outages can be reported at www.ladwp.com/outages or by calling 1-800-DIAL-DWP (1-800-342-5397).
