Media Monitor: CSIS reports on cybercrime costs, Operation Fury, AI in food security and drone disruptions

CSIS External Relations is reporting that the United States loses more than $20 billion annually to cybercrime, which the 2023 U.S. National Cyber Strategy designated a national security threat. It said cybercrime undermines the U.S. economy, society and public trust.

The organization also reported that the U.S. has struck over 13,000 Iranian military and industrial targets during Operation Fury. CSIS noted that these strikes alone have not ended the conflict, highlighting the continued importance of U.S. land power as part of the joint force.

In other findings, CSIS stated that artificial intelligence is improving humanitarian food assistance. It said the World Food Programme's SCOUT tool saved approximately $6.2 million over 18 months by optimizing food purchases and storage locations.

Finally, CSIS reported a significant increase in drone disruptions at public gatherings. The National Football League recorded more than 2,800 drones breaching restricted airspace near stadiums during its 2023 season, a sharp rise from a dozen in 2017. The U.S. military has also reported drone sightings over its facilities.
