Mayor Karen Bass today toured the Cinerama Dome with film industry and city leaders to accelerate the reopening of the Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument. The visit aimed to ensure the iconic venue reopens to filmgoers under an expedited timeline.
The tour included leadership from Sony Pictures and Alamo Drafthouse Cinema, alongside General Managers from the LA Department of Water and Power, City Planning, Department of Building and Safety, LA Fire Department, and the President of the Board of Public Works. This collaborative effort underscores a commitment to the historic restoration.
"We can’t wait to welcome the next generation of filmgoers to enjoy the magic of the iconic Cinerama Dome," Mayor Bass said. "I brought City departments, developers, and industry leaders together today to show our commitment to getting this historic restoration over the finish line." She thanked partners for sharing her vision for Los Angeles as a premier destination for the entertainment industry to invest, create, and thrive. Councilmember Hugo Soto-Martinez added that the reopening "will mean so much to our neighborhoods, our entertainment industry, and the future of Los Angeles."
This initiative aligns with Mayor Bass's broader efforts to bolster the entertainment industry, which include championing increased film and TV tax credits and implementing Executive Directive 11. This directive has led to reduced filming fees at Griffith Observatory, the reopening of the Central Library for filming, and streamlined application processes at the Port of Los Angeles and LADOT.
Further support includes the appointment of Board of Public Works President Steve Kang as the Mayor’s Liaison to the Film and Television Industry, providing concierge-style service to productions. Mayor Bass also established an Entertainment Industry Council and issued Executive Directive 8 to support local film and TV production, ensuring the city remains a film-friendly partner.
