Arlington County Police have announced criminal charges against Tyler Abrahim Afsar, 23, of Hyattsville, MD, in connection with a carjacking that occurred in the Cherrydale neighborhood on July 14, 2026. Afsar faces charges including Armed Carjacking, Use of a Firearm in the Commission of a Felony, Robbery, Possession of a Firearm by a Convicted Felon, and Grand Larceny Auto. He is currently detained in Washington, D.C.
The incident took place around 12:59 p.m. on July 14 in the 4100 block of 18th Street N. An adult female victim was in her parked vehicle when a suspect, driving a stolen pickup truck, approached, brandished a firearm, and demanded her vehicle. The suspect also stole contents from her purse before fleeing in her vehicle. No injuries were reported.
Later that evening, law enforcement located the stolen vehicle in Prince George’s County, MD. A pursuit ensued with assistance from Prince George’s County Police Department and United States Park Police, ending in a crash in Washington, D.C. Afsar, the sole occupant, was taken into custody by United States Park Police, and a firearm was recovered. Detectives obtained warrants for Afsar's arrest on August 5, 2026, after evidence linked him to the carjacking.
