Representative James Walkinshaw has addressed the significant increase in back-to-school costs for Fairfax families, criticized the Trump administration's economic policies, and initiated a congressional investigation into an incident involving an ICE agent in Northern Virginia. He also highlighted successful local service initiatives and upcoming opportunities for students.
Families in Fairfax are facing nearly 8% higher costs for school supplies and an additional $400 per child for lunches this school year, with lunchboxes alone up 27%. Rep. Walkinshaw attributed these increases to the Trump administration’s tariff policies and economic uncertainty, stating, "Families should not have to pay the price for economic policies that make everyday goods more expensive." He is actively working in Congress to lower costs, protect food assistance, expand the Child Tax Credit, and reduce childcare expenses.
In a separate development, Rep. Walkinshaw, alongside Representatives Don Beyer and Suhas Subramanyam, has launched a congressional investigation into an August 10 encounter in Bailey’s Crossroads. Video footage reportedly shows a masked ICE agent pointing a firearm at Carolina Molina, a U.S. citizen. The representatives, joined by top Democrats from key House committees, are demanding a full FBI investigation, a Justice Department review of agent conduct, and the preservation of body-camera footage and incident reports. Walkinshaw emphasized, "Federal law enforcement officers are entrusted with significant power. That power must come with accountability, transparency, and respect for constitutional rights."
Walkinshaw also reported on the success of a recent Passport Day at the West Springfield Government Center, which provided convenient access to passport application services for Fairfax residents. Additionally, Virginia Railway Express will offer special Sunday service on August 23 to help residents avoid traffic for the Freedom 250 Grand Prix in Washington. Students in Virginia’s 11th District are encouraged to apply for U.S. Service Academy nominations for the Class of 2031, with applications due by October 2, 2026.
