Nebraska Game and Parks has announced improved fishing opportunities at two Interstate 80 lakes in south-central Nebraska, alongside upcoming community events and highlighted prime fishing locations across the state.
Lake No. 1 at Windmill State Recreation Area near Gibbon and the east lake at Dogwood Wildlife Management Area near Overton underwent treatment during the week of July 20 to eliminate unwanted fish populations, including common carp and gizzard shad. These lakes are slated for restocking this fall with yellow perch, black crappie, bluegill, and largemouth bass, promising significantly better fishing for anglers.
Anglers can also engage with fisheries biologists at upcoming Community Fishing Nights in North Platte and Alliance through the new "Chat with a Biologist" feature. These events offer free fishing instruction, loaner bait and equipment, and opportunities to ask questions about fishing advice, stocking efforts, and conservation decisions. Fishing expert Daryl Bauer advises that during summer, when prey is abundant, anglers should focus on placing bait directly into a fish's "strike zone" to secure a bite.
Lake Ogallala is highlighted as a serene cold-water fishing destination, sheltered by Kingsley Dam, ideal for trout and yellow perch. Since an Aquatic Habitat Program in 2023, over 134,000 9- to 13-inch trout, primarily rainbows and some tiger trout, have been stocked. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission also provides online resources, including interactive public waters and lake contour maps, to help anglers discover new fishing spots.
