The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) announced it will reopen Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood overnight following the completion of repairs to a large diameter pipe rupture. Crews prioritized safety, shifting to an alternate plan to isolate a section of the water pipe and maintain service after recurring leaks complicated initial repair attempts.
LADWP personnel will demobilize overnight, and the L.A. County Sheriff Department will lift all related street closures. While emergency road repairs allow for the street's reopening, the paving is temporary, with permanent street paving scheduled for completion in the coming weeks after coordination with West Hollywood officials.
David W. Hanson, LADWP Interim General Manager, said, "Our crews worked tirelessly, day and night, to make progress on the complex, multi-step repairs, and we are proud to reopen Sunset Boulevard on target." He thanked the community for its patience and committed to accelerating the full replacement of the trunk line.
Looking ahead, LADWP will accelerate the full replacement of this trunk line, a major infrastructure project originally slated for 2031. This complex, four-year construction effort will require detailed traffic management planning, close coordination with local stakeholders, and compliance with state regulatory processes. LADWP is committed to expediting necessary permitting and reviews.
