U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is seeking a fine exceeding $470,000 against immigration attorney Suraj Raj Singh for allegedly filing 118 fraudulent asylum claims on behalf of his clients.
The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced that ICE's Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) issued a Notice of Intent to Fine against Singh on July 28. Singh, who primarily represents Indian nationals, is accused of submitting identical or nearly identical declarations in 54 immigration cases, containing similar factual narratives and supporting details for claimed persecution.
DHS General Counsel James Percival said, "Fraudulent asylum claims threaten the safety of the American people, undermine our immigration system, and delay the removal of dangerous criminal illegal aliens." He added that under President Trump and Secretary Mullin, attorneys like Singh will be held accountable to end the practice of defrauding the immigration system. This action aligns with a prior DHS directive to crack down on asylum fraud.
