Geomagnetic Storms Expected as Solar Activity Forecasts M-Class Flares

The geomagnetic field is expected to experience quiet to major storm levels over the next two days, according to the latest Joint USAF/NOAA Solar Geophysical Activity Report and Forecast issued on August 27, 2026.

Solar activity has remained low, with five sunspot regions currently visible. However, forecasters predict a 45% chance of M-class solar flares and a 10% chance of X-class flares daily from August 28 to August 30.

While the geomagnetic field was quiet in the past 24 hours, with solar wind peaking at 274 km/s, the outlook suggests increased activity. There is also a 10% chance of proton events crossing thresholds during the forecast period. Middle latitudes face a 25% chance of major-severe storms on August 28, while high latitudes have a 75% chance on the same day.
