The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Louisiana has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office in Louisiana before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said.

The Social Security Administration pointed to a range of popular online services, including reviewing your latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, and appeal a medical decision through the agency's website.

Account management services available online include changing your address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing your 1099.

The agency also offers online help and answers, including reviewing its FAQs, requesting a replacement Medicare card and requesting a replacement Social Security card.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account, joining the millions who use it to discover their benefits.
