The Social Security Administration said the operational status of its local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Mississippi has changed.

In a notice to the public, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office, card center or hearing office before visiting.

The agency also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online.

"Did you know that you can handle a lot of your business with us online?" the agency said.

The Social Security Administration listed a range of popular online services, including reviewing your latest statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.

People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision.

Account management services available online include changing your address, setting up or changing direct deposit, printing proof of benefits and printing your 1099.

The agency said help and answers are also available online, including a review of frequently asked questions, and requests for a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card.

The Social Security Administration encouraged the public to go digital and create a personal my Social Security account.
