Governor Abigail Spanberger is urging Virginians to prepare for an impending historic heat wave, expected to bring extremely hot and humid conditions across the Commonwealth from Wednesday, July 1, through Sunday, July 5, 2026.
The National Weather Service forecasts prolonged, widespread heat, with the most intense conditions anticipated Thursday through Saturday. Heat index values are projected to reach between 105 and 115 degrees Fahrenheit in many areas.
Governor Spanberger emphasized public safety, saying, “As Virginia expects record-breaking high temperatures leading up to and throughout the holiday weekend, the safety of all our neighbors is my highest priority. I am asking Virginians to do all you can to keep yourself and your loved ones safe. Stay hydrated, stay cool, and check on your neighbors.”
To prevent heat-related illness, the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) recommends staying indoors, drinking plenty of water, and avoiding alcohol and sugary drinks. Residents should wear lightweight, light-colored clothing, limit physical activity, and never leave children or pets in cars. VDH also advises checking on neighbors, especially those aged 65 or older, who are particularly vulnerable. Virginians can locate cooling centers via the VDH online tool and track local heat risk using the CDC’s HeatRisk tool.
