The first week of the Fairfax County Police Department's "Operation Safe Right Turn" traffic initiative ended with more than 1,000 citations and warnings issued, the department said.
Officers conducted targeted enforcement for traffic violations focused on pedestrian safety after multiple incidents occurred throughout Fairfax County. The coordinated effort resulted in 1,151 citations and warnings being issued, and officers distributed approximately 5,600 flyers to community members highlighting pedestrian safety.
As a result of the effort to spread awareness, "Operation Safe Right Turn" is expected to continue for several weeks.
Drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians are encouraged to remain attentive to reduce the possibility of crashes. The department said drivers can help by looking before they turn, checking the entire crosswalk, mirrors, and blind spots before moving, and yielding to pedestrians within the crosswalk.
Drivers should also expect bicyclists and scooters, which can approach an intersection more quickly than a pedestrian and may be difficult to see without an intentional check, and give driving their full time and attention, as a momentary lapse at an intersection can have serious consequences.
Residents can register their cameras with Connect Fairfax to help FCPD solve crimes, locate missing people, and support investigations.
