A Columbia University-led team has secured an award of up to $5 million from the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H) to develop HARMONI, an innovative AI-powered wearable monitoring system. This new technology aims to provide clinicians with continuous, objective insights into the health of both mother and baby throughout labor, marking a significant advancement in childbirth monitoring.
The current technology used for monitoring babies during labor, electronic fetal monitoring, has seen little change since its introduction in the late 1960s. HARMONI seeks to revolutionize this by offering more actionable information precisely when timely decisions are most critical for patient care.
Xia Zhou, associate professor of computer science at Columbia Engineering and co-lead principal investigator, expressed a personal connection to the project. "This project has a very special place in my heart," Zhou said. "As a mother of two, I have experienced firsthand how stressful and uncertain labor can be, even with excellent medical care." The initiative underscores a commitment to enhancing safety and reducing anxiety during one of life's most crucial moments.
