The Washington Post is reporting that it has launched an initiative called the Freedom Desk, aimed at supporting independent journalism. It said the effort unites journalists and supporters working to fill growing information gaps around the world, especially in places where governments are cracking down on independent media.

The Post said the ban of CNN, MS NOW and Politico from White House press access is a reminder that press freedom cannot be taken for granted.

The Post said it hosted a conversation with Hillary Clinton about the Trump administration's latest attack on the press. It also said it published a new video podcast, "Freedom Desk with Jason Rezaian," available on Apple Podcasts, Spotify and YouTube, and released an episode featuring CNN's Clarissa Ward on why firsthand reporting matters.

The Post said it is inviting readers to sign up for the Freedom Desk newsletter for news and conversations with people shaping the future of press freedom.
