The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued an Early Alert concerning certain lots of Hamilton Medical coaxial breathing circuit sets, which may not perform as intended and have been linked to four serious injuries. These sets are used with HAMILTON-C1, HAMILTON T-1, and HAMILTON-MR1 ventilators.
Hamilton Medical reported that the expiratory valve membrane in some circuit sets can adhere to the sealing ring, obstructing the valve opening and impairing expiratory gas flow. This malfunction can lead to inadequate ventilation, impaired gas exchange, and oxygen desaturation (hypoxemia), posing a risk of acute respiratory compromise.
As of May 13, four serious injuries have been reported in connection with this issue, with no deaths. Hamilton Medical has advised affected customers to review and follow updated pre-operative test and troubleshooting instructions before continued use. The FDA will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates.
