Over 22% in U.S. Speak a Language Other Than English at Home

New data from the U.S. Census Bureau reveals that over 22% of individuals aged five and older in the United States spoke a language other than English at home between 2017 and 2021. This information comes from the American Community Survey (ACS). The data encompasses more than 500 specific languages and language groups spoken across the nation. This detailed language table package, which updates the last release from 2015, is the third of its kind issued by the Census Bureau, supplementing the 42 languages and language groups published annually in the ACS.

The Census Bureau has also highlighted that some of the 70-plus Native North American languages are among the most spoken languages after English in nine states.
