The Hunter Mill District is set for a vibrant summer with the return of the free Hunter Mill Melodies concert series, community World Cup watch parties, and important updates on local development and safety initiatives. Supervisor Walter Alcorn announced the lineup of events and key information for residents in his weekly news update.
The popular Hunter Mill Melodies concert series at Frying Pan Farm Park offers diverse musical genres, from bluegrass to blues and rock. "I’m thrilled to announce another fantastic season of Hunter Mill Melodies at Frying Pan Farm Park," said Supervisor Walter Alcorn. This year introduces food trucks on-site for select Thursday evening concerts, starting at 7 p.m. on July 16 with Two Smooth Dudes and August 6 with Leo's Tacos. Evening concerts for adults are held Thursdays at Kidwell Farm, while interactive shows for children take place Wednesday mornings at the Frying Pan Park Visitor Center Pavilion.
Sports enthusiasts in the Hunter Mill District can cheer on the U.S. team in the World Cup's "knock out" phase tonight, July 1, at 8 p.m. Local watch parties are organized at Kalypso's Sports Tavern in Lake Anne, Reston Metro Plaza, and Bear Branch Tavern in Vienna. Additionally, a proposed Comprehensive Plan amendment for Lake Anne is under consideration, which would allow the Reston Community Center to potentially expand its non-residential space to 30,000 square feet during the redevelopment of the Crescent Apartments, a move initiated by Supervisor Alcorn in May.
Community engagement is also sought for a heat island mapping initiative by the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and George Mason University, requiring 30 volunteer teams in July to measure temperature disparities in areas like Reston, Tysons, and Herndon. Furthermore, e-bike safety is a growing concern, prompting a review of regulations. Virginia categorizes e-bikes into three classes, with specific rules regarding helmets for riders under 15 and age restrictions for Class 3 bikes. Fairfax County recently updated its helmet laws to include e-bikes, and the Virginia General Assembly is conducting a statewide review of micromobility device laws, with recommendations expected in November.
Beyond these initiatives, Vienna will host its Independence Day celebration on July 2 with fireworks and live music, and a "Reading America's Story" event on July 4. Other local events include a panel celebrating the 19th Amendment, various musical performances, and cultural activities throughout July.
