The Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is investigating a wastewater bypass in Keokuk, Lee County, which has resulted in an unknown quantity of wastewater discharging into the Mississippi River.
The City of Keokuk notified the DNR on August 3 about the ongoing bypass, caused by a partially plugged line and malfunctioning equipment within its wastewater collection system. The issue was initially reported last week, but its severity was not fully understood until inspection equipment was used.
The discharge is occurring through a combined sewer outfall located east of the wastewater treatment plant, upstream from a public boat ramp on Mississippi Drive. While repairs are currently underway, downstream recreational users are advised to exercise caution and avoid the affected area.
The DNR has reported no observable impacts to the river, such as dead fish, and water samples have been collected for testing. The department will continue to monitor the situation and follow up with the city for further assessment.
