Representative James Walkinshaw announced that the House of Representatives is expected to consider two bipartisan bills he introduced next week, including legislation to rename the Springfield Post Office and the Measuring Illicit Fentanyl Trafficking Act.
One of the bills is bicameral legislation to rename the Springfield Post Office in honor of his predecessor, Congressman Gerry Connolly. Rep. Walkinshaw described Connolly as a "singular leader whose decades of public service transformed Fairfax, strengthened our nation, and left a lasting impact around the world," adding that naming the post office in his honor is a "fitting tribute to a man who dedicated his life to serving our community."
The House is also slated to consider the Measuring Illicit Fentanyl Trafficking Act, a bipartisan measure designed to assist the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in better understanding and measuring the flow of illicit fentanyl into the United States. Rep. Walkinshaw emphasized that "better data means better policies to stop these deadly drugs from reaching our communities and save lives."
Beyond these legislative efforts, Rep. Walkinshaw highlighted his ongoing focus on lowering costs for families, protecting the federal workforce, and enhancing Fairfax as a place to live, work, and raise a family. He also recently joined over 170 House Democrats in urging Postmaster General David Steiner to reject a proposed rule that could allow the Postal Service to withhold mail ballots, arguing it would create unnecessary barriers for voters.
As a member of the House Homeland Security Committee, Rep. Walkinshaw questioned U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials regarding reports of DHS agents using tear gas or pepper spray on children, demanding transparency and accountability. He also visited Washington National Airport's air traffic control tower to support aviation safety and noted Fairfax County's new "Empowerment and Support for Residents Facing Vulnerability" initiative aimed at improving access to county services.
