Newsweek is reporting that Supreme Court Chief Justice John Roberts temporarily allowed President Donald Trump's $400 million White House ballroom project to move forward. It said Roberts' order pauses a lower court ruling that would have halted construction pending congressional approval.
Newsweek is also reporting that construction has begun on a second wall along a stretch of the U.S.-Mexico border in Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument, Arizona. It said bulldozers are clearing protected desert habitat for the additional barrier, which is part of President Donald Trump's administration's "Smart Wall" system. U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 381.2 miles of secondary border wall are under construction nationwide. The National Parks Conservation Association, which published images of the construction, noted an existing 30-foot wall already spans the monument's southern boundary.
Separately, Newsweek is reporting that a 5-year-old Texas boy and his father were taken to an immigration detention center by federal agents. It said this occurred days before the boy was to start kindergarten, as they traveled to a soccer game.
Federal sales of protected wild horses have sharply increased under the Trump administration, Newsweek is reporting. It said this surge is fueling concerns among animal-welfare groups that some horses could enter slaughter channels after being sold through a government program.
Newsweek is reporting that the national violent crime rate saw its largest year-to-year decline in almost 90 years. It said a recent FBI report showed Alaska had the highest violent crime rate in the country, while Maine had the lowest.
