The University of Pennsylvania is marking the approaching 250th anniversary of American independence by reflecting on its history and reaffirming its commitment to the nation's founding ideals. President J. Larry Jameson shared observations drawn from the life of founder Benjamin Franklin, highlighting principles that continue to guide the university.
President Jameson said, "Franklin’s timeless principles and vision continue to define Penn’s commitment to rigorous inquiry, useful knowledge, respectful dialogue across differences, and service to society." He added that these principles "guide our University’s efforts as we help shape a brighter future for our nation and the world." Penn's semiquincentennial commemoration includes art exhibits, courses, nationally renowned speakers, workshops, and musical programming, described by Lynne Farrington as a "collective effort, engaging a creative and committed group of faculty, staff, and students."
As Philadelphia and Penn stand at the heart of the country's commemoration, the celebration extends to local culture. WXPN will host "The Philly 250" from July 3-5, a special programming series counting down the top 250 songs from, by, and about the city, featuring highlights from artists like David Bowie and events such as the Roots Picnic.
