Jamil Whitley, 38, of Washington, D.C., was found guilty yesterday in D.C. Superior Court for the 2020 shooting death of 32-year-old Kevin Redd, a father of four, in the Deanwood neighborhood.

A jury delivered the verdict on May 12, 2026, after a nearly month-long trial. Whitley was convicted on charges including second-degree murder while armed, possession of a firearm during a crime of violence, carrying a pistol without a license, and unlawful possession of a firearm. Superior Court Judge Danya Dayson has scheduled sentencing for July 17, 2026.

Evidence presented showed that on June 11, 2020, Whitley and Redd had an encounter at a Shell Gas Station. Surveillance video captured the two men speaking before Whitley left and then returned in a different vehicle, his face covered by a surgical mask. Redd entered Whitley’s car, which then sped off, narrowly avoiding another vehicle. Moments later, security cameras recorded gunshots in an alley behind 4722 Jay Street, N.E., where Redd was found with fatal gunshot wounds.

Whitley was arrested on August 25, 2021, and has remained in custody since. The Metropolitan Police Department and the Federal Bureau of Investigation investigated the case, with Assistant United States Attorneys Michelle D. Jackson and Negar Kordestani prosecuting.
