Fairfax County’s Hunter Mill District is set for a vibrant summer, with Supervisor Walter Alcorn announcing the return of the free "Hunter Mill Melodies" concert series at Frying Pan Farm Park, featuring a diverse lineup of music and, for the first time, on-site food trucks for select evening performances.
The concert series offers entertainment for all ages, with evening shows for adults on Thursdays from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Kidwell Farm, and interactive morning shows for children on Wednesdays from 10 to 10:45 a.m. at the Frying Pan Park Visitor Center Pavilion. Food trucks, including Two Smooth Dudes on July 16 and Leo's Tacos on August 6, will enhance the Thursday evening experience. Attendees are encouraged to bring lawn chairs and blankets, and can check for cancellations on the concert phone line (571-202-SHOW) or online one hour before showtime due to inclement weather.
Beyond the music, the district is buzzing with other activities. Residents can cheer on the U.S. in the World Cup at various watch parties across the Hunter Mill District, including Kalypso's Sports Tavern, Reston Metro Plaza, and Bear Branch Tavern. Additionally, a replay of the town hall meeting on the proposed Lake Anne Comprehensive Plan amendment, which could allow the Reston Community Center to be included in the Crescent Apartments redevelopment, is available online.
Community involvement is also sought for a "Heat Island Mapping" initiative by the Faith Alliance for Climate Solutions and George Mason University, requiring volunteers in July to measure temperature disparities in areas like Reston, Tysons, and Herndon. This effort aims to help communities adapt to climate-related conditions.
E-bike safety is another key focus, following a recent minor accident in Reston. Supervisor Alcorn highlighted Virginia's e-bike classifications (Class 1, 2, and 3) and helmet laws, noting that riders and passengers under 15 must wear helmets on any class of e-bike, and Class 3 riders must be at least 14 years old. A statewide review of micromobility device laws is underway, with recommendations expected in November.
Vienna will host its Independence Day celebration on July 2 at Yeonas Park, featuring live music, food trucks, and fireworks. Other local events include a "Foundational Documents Reading" on July 4, a panel celebrating the 19th Amendment on July 8, and numerous concerts, theatrical performances, and cultural events throughout July.
