Newsweek is reporting that Canada unveiled $20 billion in retaliatory tariffs against the United States on Tuesday, escalating tensions between the two nations. It said President Donald Trump demanded Canadian leaders "fall in line," while Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of seeking to weaken Canada's sovereignty and economy. Canada's Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the "dollar-for-dollar, rate for rate counter-tariffs" and a multi-billion dollar support package would protect workers, farmers, families, and businesses. The tariffs, ranging from 15 percent to 50 percent on approximately 700 U.S. products, are set to take effect Sept. 8. Newsweek also reported that Trump is giving "serious consideration" to renaming Lake Ontario as "Lake America" as the trade dispute continues.
Separately, Newsweek is reporting that country music trailblazer Dolly Parton has died at age 80. It said Parton's songwriting, voice and larger-than-life persona shaped American culture for more than six decades.
In other news, Newsweek said a federal judge on Tuesday rejected Ghislaine Maxwell’s attempt to overturn her sex-trafficking conviction and 20-year prison sentence. This decision closes her last remaining path to early release after appeals were exhausted.
