The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has strongly refuted claims made by New Jersey politicians, including Governor Mikie Sherrill and Senators Cory Booker and Andy Kim, regarding conditions at the Delaney Hall ICE facility, labeling their allegations as "smears" and "political stunts."
DHS asserted that all detainees at Delaney Hall are provided with three meals a day, clean water, clothing, bedding, showers, soap, and toiletries. They also have access to phones, and certified dieticians evaluate meals. The department highlighted that comprehensive medical care, including medical, dental, and mental health services, along with 24-hour emergency care, is available, often exceeding standards found in most U.S. prisons.
Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis stated, "This is nothing more than a political stunt by New Jersey sanctuary politicians for fundraising clicks. There is NO hunger strike at Delaney Hall. There are NO subprime conditions or abuse at the facility." Bis urged these politicians to cooperate with ICE in removing dangerous criminal illegal aliens, such as murderers, rapists, and drug traffickers, from their communities.
DHS also noted that such "smears" contribute to a more than 1,300% increase in assaults against ICE officers. The department provided examples of individuals arrested in New Jersey with extensive criminal histories, including Jose De La O Lainez for homicide, Steven McKenzie for homicide and aggravated assault, and Jhan Martinez-Valverde for a sex offense against a child.
