The U.S. Department of the Treasury, in collaboration with First Lady Melania Trump's Fostering the Future initiative, has announced the launch of "Fostering the Future Accounts" to provide long-term financial security for children and youth in foster care. These specialized accounts, powered by the new "Trump Accounts" savings tool, aim to democratize private ownership and compound growth for vulnerable youth.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, speaking at The Trump Accounts for Foster Youth Event, highlighted the First Lady's leadership in ensuring foster youth face no barriers to accessing these benefits. "Through the leadership of First Lady Melania Trump and her Fostering the Future initiative, children and youth in foster care now have a pathway to benefit from Trump Accounts," Bessent said. The broader Trump Accounts program offers a $1,000 contribution from Treasury to every American child born between January 2025 and December 2028, projected to grow significantly by retirement.
Launching on July 4th, the program will allow all eligible children, including those with the state as a legal guardian, to participate. States are encouraged to direct survivor and SSI benefits into these accounts, with Louisiana, under Governor Jeff Landry, recognized for its early leadership. Treasury will also provide dedicated support to child welfare agencies through a specialized support line.
Secretary Bessent emphasized the program's potential to transform futures, noting that one in five foster youth become homeless after aging out of the system, and only half secure gainful employment by age twenty-four. "Trump Accounts will build long-term financial security for millions of children. And for foster youth in particular, the program will ensure that their futures are shaped more by the possibilities before them rather than the circumstances behind them," Bessent said. He drew a historical parallel to Alexander Hamilton, an orphan who became Treasury Secretary, and his wife Eliza, who established New York's first private orphanage, underscoring the nation's commitment to equal opportunity.
