The Nebraska Floodplain Management Division is offering a series of free virtual training sessions and workshops throughout 2026, designed to equip local officials and community members with essential knowledge for managing floodplains, especially in the wake of recent natural disasters.
Two "Open Office Hours: Post-Disaster Responsibilities Q&A" sessions are scheduled for Thursday, May 21, 2026, at 1:00 p.m. CT, and Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 9:00 a.m. CT. These sessions directly address recent flood, tornado, and storm events across Nebraska, providing a forum for questions on post-disaster duties, substantial damage assessments, and permitting for rebuilding and repairs in National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP) participating communities. Floodplain administrators, emergency managers, and those involved in damage assessments are encouraged to attend; pre-registration is not required, and continuing education credits will not be offered.
Additionally, a "Basic Floodplain Management" virtual class will be held on Wednesday, June 17, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. CT. This four-hour course covers fundamentals such as floodplain development permits, map reading, Letters of Map Amendment (LOMAs), Letters of Map Revision Based on Fill (LOMR-Fs), and substantial damage and improvement. Continuing education credits are available for Treasurers of Nebraska counties/municipalities in the NFIP and for Certified Floodplain Managers (CFMs), but advance registration is necessary.
The division commits to hosting at least one free virtual training per month, with popular topics potentially offered twice annually. Two in-person workshops will also be provided each year at varying locations. Future virtual classes are planned for July 2026, with quarterly after-hour classes and a fall 2026 in-person workshop also anticipated. An archive of recently recorded classes is available, though certificates of completion or continuing education credits are only granted for live virtual session participation.
For specific training needs, registration questions, or to schedule a one-on-one discussion if the scheduled times are inconvenient, individuals can contact Michele York.
