Time Magazine is reporting that Republicans in the Texas Senate race are focusing on Democratic nominee James Talarico's personal life and perceived masculinity rather than policy. It said this strategy is being employed despite Republican candidate Ken Paxton facing numerous scandals, including a 2015 indictment on federal securities-fraud charges.
Time reported that Paxton, after securing the Republican nomination, referred to Talarico as "Tofu Talarico" and "Low-T Talarico," implying low testosterone. A Fox News host called Talarico a "gay vegan," and President Donald Trump's top adviser, Stephen Miller, stated Talarico is "clearly transitioning into a female," adding that "soy milk comes out" during a blood test. President Trump also weighed in, telling reporters, "He’s a vegan in Texas, and you can’t get elected as a vegan in Texas."
Time noted that Talarico, who eats meat and has a girlfriend, is pushing back against these attacks. He responded by saying he has "been eating barbecue since before Ken Paxton’s first indictment" and has begun selling merchandise with the "Tala-freak-o" branding. His campaign also confirmed his girlfriend's identity after a Texas outlet published her name.
The magazine said Talarico's campaign is focusing on Paxton's record, stating, "I have a legislative record. Ken Paxton has a criminal record." This approach highlights Paxton's felony securities fraud charges and a federal investigation for public corruption.
Time indicated that this focus on personal traits over policy is a broader Republican strategy in other states like Georgia and New Hampshire, suggesting the GOP is struggling to present a compelling narrative for continued dominance and fears losing a debate on merits.
