The Social Security Administration said the operational status of local offices, card centers and hearing offices in Texas has changed.
In a notice to the public, the agency directed people to check the current status of their local office before visiting. "The operational status of your local office, card center, or hearing office in Texas has changed," the agency said.
The SSA also reminded the public that a visit may not be necessary, noting that many services can be handled online. "You may not need to visit an office," the agency said, adding that a lot of business can be completed through its online services.
Among the popular online options the agency highlighted are reviewing a person's latest Social Security statement and earnings history, estimating retirement benefits, and checking the status of an application or appeal.
People can also apply online for retirement, disability and Medicare benefits, or appeal a medical decision. Account management tools allow users to change an address, set up or change direct deposit, print proof of benefits and print a 1099.
The agency further pointed to online help resources, including its frequently asked questions and options to request a replacement Medicare card or a replacement Social Security card. It encouraged the public to create a personal my Social Security account, describing it as a way to "Go Digital" and discover your benefits.
