Governor Abigail Spanberger marked her first six months in office by highlighting efforts to lower costs for families, strengthen Virginia's economy, and invest in education, emphasizing the passage of the entire Affordable Virginia Agenda.
The Governor noted the agenda's focus on tax relief through an increased standard deduction, raising the minimum wage, capping insulin costs, and establishing paid family and medical leave, making Virginia the first Southern state to do so. She also mentioned a new energy consumption tax on data centers.
Key legislative actions include capping monthly out-of-pocket insulin costs at $35, requiring insurers to cap total prescription drug costs, and providing $150 million for Affordable Care Act premium assistance. The administration also enacted a bipartisan biennium budget, including a record $2 billion investment in public education, 4 percent raises for teachers, and funds to prevent tuition hikes.
Spanberger announced over $5 billion in new business investment and more than 3,000 new jobs. She also established a first-of-its-kind energy consumption tax on data centers, projected to generate $600 million annually. Looking ahead, the Governor plans to address housing supply, unveil new energy and economic development plans, and continue advocating for environmental standards for data centers. "Together, we will continue building a safer, stronger, and more affordable future by delivering real solutions that Virginians can trust," Governor Spanberger said.
