Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced today that "RISING," a documentary chronicling the rebuilding efforts in Eastern Kentucky following the devastating 2022 floods, is now available for streaming on Prime Video. Proceeds from the film will benefit the Team Kentucky Emergency Relief Fund, which supports Kentuckians affected by natural disasters.
The 60-minute film highlights the strength and resilience of Eastern Kentuckians and the ambitious rebuilding initiative led by Gov. Beshear and state and local leaders. This effort involves constructing new homes on abandoned coal mine sites, out of floodplains, with eight high-ground communities either completed or in progress. "RISING is a story that shows what’s possible when you put your people first, work together and demand a solution that will bring meaningful change," said Gov. Beshear.
Prior to its Prime Video release, "RISING" premiered in Prestonsburg last September and was screened across Kentucky and in Cincinnati, Ohio, raising over $48,000 for the relief fund. The announcement comes just before the four-year anniversary of the 2022 floods, which claimed 45 lives. Gov. Beshear and First Lady Britainy Beshear plan to visit Eastern Kentucky on July 27 to provide updates on the high-ground communities, including the completed Wayland and The Cottages at Thompson Branch sites.
More than 500 homes are planned across eight communities in five counties, in addition to scattered site constructions. Kentuckians impacted by the 2021, 2022, or 2025 floods are encouraged to visit HousingCantWait.org to fill out an interest form.
