Yale University is marking exactly 60 years since the dedication of Harkness Tower's Yale Memorial Carillon, the university announced in its Yale Today newsletter dated October 2, 2026.
Before 1966, Harkness housed only 10 bells. That year, Hartford philanthropist Florence S. Marcy Crofut donated 44 more, well surpassing the 23-bell minimum needed to be considered a carillon. The music of those bells still resounds, ringing twice daily during the academic year and for special performances throughout the year, including a recent program of Disney favorites.
Elsewhere at Yale, researchers across the School of Medicine are working to better understand the biological underpinnings of anxiety disorders, among the most common mental health challenges in youth, and to help young people and their families find relief.
The third annual Yale @ Climate Week summit, held last month at the Yale Club of New York City, convened scholars, students, policymakers, and leaders from across Yale and beyond to examine how universities can help convert climate knowledge into action.
Yale Sustainability will host a series of programs around campus Oct. 5–9 — including mushroom foraging, tours of sustainable spaces, and scholarly forums — to raise awareness and spur action on climate change and sustainable living.
In a Q&A, Yale SOM's William English, a former Federal Reserve economist, explained what is driving bond yields above 5.6% for the first time since 2002 and what it means for the Fed, the federal budget, and the broader economy.
Upcoming campus events include a seminar with Irish studies scholar Luke Gibbons, a book talk with author Craig Fehrman, and a concert with the Yale Repertory Chorus.
